Police Shooting of Jacob Blake, Kenosha Wisconsin Black Man

Most likely you have seen the news (and possibly the video of the horrific incident) of Jacob Blake, a 29-year-old Black man from Kenosha, Wisconsin that was shot by police. Fortunately he is alive and in stable condition, but not without causing trauma to his three kids that witnessed the shooting, his family as well as continued trauma to the rest of the Black community. There should be no reason to justify him being shot (shot at 7 times in point-blank range), do not play devil’s advocate in the matter, because this is not up for discussion. Enough is enough, how many more Black lives are to be taken or threatened for change and reform to take place. Blake’s incident has naturally caused national outrage and sparked local protests. Blake will need tremendous support for medical bills, his family and legal representation - an official gofundme page has been created for donations, please help if you can here or below.

As there is currently an ongoing investigation, you can see the Wisconsin DOJ’s official statement and check back to their site for updates - it has been advised that although the video captures the incident, it does not fully capture the intricacies of what took place and for people to not quickly pass judgement.. One thing is for sure, Jacob Blake and his family have endured something so horrific that will result in irreparable damages to everyone - and it was absolutely and completely unnecessary use of force and violence by the police. I myself cannot watch the footage, but what we know from information reported is:

  • The "officer involved shooting” happened on Sunday August 23rd shortly after 5pm

  • Officers were responding to a call regarding a domestic incident. Blake was attempting to de-escalate a domestic situation between two women.

  • He was shot in the back at point blank when trying to access the driver side of his car

  • Three of his children were sitting in the car and witnessed the shooting

  • Two officers have been put on administrative leave

  • Blake was unarmed, although it was said that police were yelling drop the knife, a witness and the man who’s video went viral, states he did not see any weapons in Blake’s hands

Blake and his family are now being represented by civil rights attorney Ben Crump, sign the petition for Jacob Blake here. From the petition:

Kenosha Police shot Jacob Blake, a 29-year-old Black man, multiple times in the back on August 23, 2020. His three young sons sat a few feet away and witnessed the entire incident. The officers involved in this shooting clearly violated the Kenosha Police Department's Use of Force Policy, which says that "sworn personnel use only the amount of physical force reasonable and necessary to arrest, apprehend, or restrain a person."

We need our elected officials to finally recognize and take swift action against the systemic racism and police brutality that's all too prevalent in Wisconsin and beyond.

We need action NOW against officers' excessive use of force and immediate escalation when engaging with Black men and women.

We need to stop adding names to the list of fallen brothers and sisters, which includes George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Juan Acevedo, and many more.

Sign this petition demanding that:

  1. As the video footage is clear and convincing, the Wisconsin Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) expedite its investigation, completing it in 30 days or less.

  2. DCI recommends charges be filed against all officers involved in the shooting of Jacob Blake.

  3. Kenosha Police Department terminates all officers involved immediately.

  4. Kenosha City Council purchases body cameras for every officer immediately. The Council passed a 2017 ordinance requiring body cameras but hasn't yet added them to the city budget (and aren't currently planning to until 2022).

  5. Wisconsin state lawmakers pass legislation against police brutality and systemic racism.

Each signature added sends a signal to local and state leaders who have the power to make a difference in this case.
